You composed the best cover letter as per your knowledge, yet you never got the job. One thing about cover letters is that they can be both a blessing and a curse. If you write it correctly, you can be sure of the job. On the other hand, if is not well written, you can forget the position all together. Here are four cover letter blunders that might have made you lose the job.

1. You never listened to the advice you were given
You have heard all the do’s and don’ts of cover writing. For some reason however, you failed to follow one or more of the tips. For instance, your hiring manager is a woman; you have met and interacted with her. Even amidst all that, you addressed her as “dear sir.” Your cover letter went to the trash can immediately.

2. You used a canned style
Although you may not like the idea of composing an exceptional cover letter for every job you apply, it is worth it. Avoid the cliché lines that everyone uses. When the employer reads the obvious from the letter, they may be bored and lose the psych to read through. After all, they have a mountain of letters that should all be read.

3. You focused on what the organization can do for you
When you apply to a position, it is natural to get excited over it and relay your enthusiasm to the company. Regardless of how happy you would be to get the job, do not make your cover letter about it. Your employer does not care about how the job they are offering you will enhance your livelihood. They want to assess your skills and expertise.

4. You highlighted your weaknesses
If you are missing a qualification for the job, your resume will show. Do not begin the letter by indicating why the employer may not want to hire you. instead, use the opportunity to market your strengths.
